January 2011 Kitchen and Serving Area Renovations

We will be closed from Tuesday 4th January 2011 until the end of the month. During this time we are having our kitchen renovated.

We will be opening again on Tuesday 1st February 2011 with a few changes to our menu.

What Happened in 2011...

Well we have just had our fourth Christmas at the Cafe, 2011 turned out to be an eventful year!

We closed during January 2011 to have our old kitchen ripped out and a brand new serving area and kitchen installed. The work was carried out by D.P. Turner Builders Ltd, we would highly recommend Darrel Turner and his brilliant team. On the first of February we reopened with a new menu and great excitement for the rest of the year with our new look kitchen!

Just as we are settling down into the year, a little disaster struck...a phone call on the evening of the 16th March 'The Cafe is full of smoke...' An hour later after the departure of two fire engines and a group of brilliant fire fighters we stood surveying our burnt out store room. Now at 1am when the shock hasn't allowed reality to settle in we were certain with a thorough clean we could be open in two days. Anyone who has had a fire or any knowledge of them will know that the chances of being open again within two days were not realistic, as the surveyor informed us the following day. Although the fire was contained to the store room, the smoke damage was throughout the building and would takes weeks of cleaning and repairs.

Darrel squeezed us into his busy project schedule and his team worked quickly to rebuild our storeroom and repaint the whole of the inside of the cafe.

With every cloud there is a silver lining, as we were lucky to have glorious unseasonal sunshine in March and our brilliant team of staff gave the outside of the cafe a fresh coat of paint, and painstakingly stained the whole of the terrace!

On the 11th April, after some great team work we got the cafe open for the beginning of the Easter Holidays, and the support from customers was brilliant, everyone piled back in and we were back on track, heading for the summer.

Did I say back on track? I spoke too soon!

The Easter Holidays were behind us and it was time to have a few normal weeks, until Mitch was rushed into hospital one evening. At 4am when the doctor informed us he needed to have his appendix out immediately, I couldn't help but start crying. The doctor thought I was a bit barmy to be crying over appendicitis! So Mitch kindly informed him, I was more likely crying over the cafe, as I didn't know who was going to cook!

So Mitch is in hospital and I'm about to pack it all in, but Naomi our brilliant supervisor took control and sorted everything out. She was still at college but took it all in her stride and kept everything running smoothly and learnt to cook our menu very quickly!

Naomi has been with us since day one, starting out as our pot washer and now this summer became our full time supervisor. She is as passionate about our business as we are and you will see her around the cafe most days. Apparently she nags Mitch as much as I do, sounds like she's perfect!

The rest of the year went smoothly, we had a great summer, with many regular faces and lots of new ones to. We would like to thank all our customers for their continued support and hope to continue to see you all in 2012.

Many thanks from

Carla, Mitch, Naomi and all of The Stables Cafe Team
